 whahaa
I got a set but never been as creative with them as you. I know limitations are in one's head and I think I got one that says sai.
Wicked practice man.

[sigh] (did ya get that one?)  grin

Anyway...

10 point deduction for use of coma inducing soundtrack
20 point deduction for blurry cam, shuttle and other pointless video effects
40 point deduction for walking around rather than correct stance work
200 point deduction for simply flailing them about rather than demonstrate a capacity for blocking or striking
200 point deduction for weak open and close manipulations (something very, very basic)

Standby deduction of 1000 points if you come here whining about how this was freestyle or "mucking about" and not kata or meant to be anything serious. Bad enough we have one weapon in the traditional arsenal that has been misappropriated into an art of making "interesting circles", we really shouldn't encourage the same with the rest of the kobu arsenal or guys like Shinken Taira will start making "interesting circles" in their graves.

If you are going to learn a weapon, learn a weapon. If you want to warm up, run a basic set with simple furi over and over. Better yet get a buddy with a bo and actually do a two man block set. If you do that for an entire month you will have more actual "weapon skills" than most of the top competitors I see today who if they ever had to use whatever they were holding as a weapon would be disarmed as soon as they came into contact with another weapon because they've never done that before.

Correctly and incorrectly blocking a bo look virtually identical. The difference is did the sai stop the bo or did your arm? Was the energy absorbed by the sai or by you or was the energy simply transfered through the sai making your weapon the one that strikes your arm because you didn't hold it correctly? It is the small little things that don't look impressive at all which are the actual skills with weapons. It really would be a shame if such knowledge became lost because people were more interested in making impressive circles with their weapons.

Don't really enjoy giving you a hard time, but you've come this far and you've invested this much time. It's not like learning practical applications would be any harder.

respect Geat practice! It is good to see so much fluidity with the Sai, this is the most creative and flowing Sai practice I have seen, love the throws, I will be picking up a pair soon so I can try them myself, +K!  bow

Great to see ya back posting SteyrAug! You always have the most interesting things to say, whether I may agree or not.

The weapon vs. art debate hasn't been brought-up in awhile here, so I'm glad to see you giving it getting some air time!

I generally try and leave it alone as we are on a "freestyle' forum and even if I personally think they are horribly misguided I understand most here aren't concerned about the fighting applications of the nunchaku.

However, we are supposedly in a "martial arts" subforum and I'm just trying to prevent having to see a youtube video of somebody juggling three sai like they were tennis balls.

I laughed so hard to this, I think I cried. Made my day.

I totally second this. Glad to see SteyrAug again, too.
There's still people interested in learning about combat nunchaku, martial arts history and fighting uses of the weapons we see here.
I'm interested, at least.

And about the topic, well, such an amazing thread-resurrection, LOL

Anyways, I can't say a lot about sai, I've never tried one.

I'm glad a few people get my jokes.

And I didn't notice till you mentioned it that the original topic was posted in 2010. So once again, not only am I tilting windmills...I'm tilting very old windmills.
