Hey guys, I'm new here and decided to take on the nunchaku.
So basically, I don't know which ones to get like I've heard about different lengths ? Can someone explain that to me ? What the difference between the different lengths.  What type of material is the best to get and so what.  I'm sorry if I sound too noobish but I kinda am  undecided

haha its ok. and im not sure witch one u should get but i can explain some stuff, normally a personal nunchaku, the lengh of the cords is mesured by ur palm.  the lengh of the sticks are ur forarm ( not so good at english ) but in reallity u can use any chucks any sized u just gotta get used to them thats all. most would say to get urself some nunchaku made of foam but the problem with that is that the weight is light so when u try it with a real chuck u wont be used to it. i guess u could buy some normal chucks from a store if theres one near. it can be chained or with cords.

Im sure youll get this alot, but experimentation is best.

DIY is the best way to go, its super cheap and you can experiment all you want.  Thats what I did, and found the absolute best nunchaku for me.  12"L 7/8"D oak with 3 1/4" paracord connection or small linked chain.  I make all my own now and have for some time, and I can make 4 pairs of chucks just the way I like with the designs I like for right under 10$(US).

If you wanna go the ordering route then there are a few choices at the top of most lists.  First if money isnt an issue then I would go with Woodalls(Link at the bottom of the page).  They are pricey, but they have plain wood to really exotic woods and many customization options, and even brought back the U-Swivel.  If money is kind of tight, then ProChux have almost all amazing reviews(Link also at the bottom).  They are very cool chucks, the thrashers are 30$, and also have a selection of exotic woods.  Or there are some basic sites like centurymartialarts.com or karatedepot.com that have cheaper nunchucks.

Anyways DIY is usually the best option as far as money wise and finding what you like, without spending tons of money on shipping or whatever.

EDIT:  Another route, I also keep myself open to options.  Where I can spin anything from a 1/2" connection wood or other, up to a 5" connection.  So make a bunch of different sizes, practice with em all Tongue

longer nunchaku is for fight because we get longer reach . .   but thats not easy to control and fast moving
the material can be from wood or stainless stell pipe (with wood inside or empty )
this my answer . . ..     thumbs-up  good luck

Well as everyone is saying it is trial and error and then what you are most comfortable with. The majority of stick length seems to be 12". If you pick up a corded pair to start with then you can change the length of that to see what is best for you.

I agree about the foam nunchaku, although you might be safer the lack of weight hinders some techniques.

I started out with foam chucks and im glad i did really because i dont like getting hit in the head when your trying something new, so i would say get some foam and some normal chucks and practice the movements with foam then use the normal harder chucks Smiley

Welcome to the forum  thumbs-up Cord length varies , it's actually a matter of personal preference. Most people judge the cord length by the width of the palm. Some people like it longer than that and some people like it shorter, It's just a matter of finding what works best for you  2 thumbs up Have fun and keep on  chucky

most nunchucks that you buy from the shops will have a cord about 4 inches... I prefer 2.5 - 3 inches. Most people here would say you just need to experiment with cord length to find what you like.
When i was first trying to do a back-to-back hand roll (first freestyle move i wanted to learn) I found that 4 inches was making it harder for me to perform the trick... However saying that other tricks can work easier with a longer cord.
Hope this has helped you Smiley

i say: 13 inch sticks, 3-3 1/2 ROPE, not chain, and if they are hard thats good..... then you will learn not to hit yourself.  grin
