respect awsome post matt  thumbs-up thanks for sharing

I'm apparently one of the few that doesn't find angry fast music conducive - my practice music needs to be reflective of my mood if I'm trying to be expressive, and I'm generally very chilled out/happy - and if I'm trying to be experimental/technical I prefer emotionally detached music like electro.

thats what i listen too too, i find electro music really gets me going. something like paul van funk or the VA electro cds are amazing to chuck too.

a point that i would make too is not to film your practice sessions. i do a hell of alot better when the camera is not on me...

You can also get wrist weights that have a flap with a thumb-hole, specially made for Tae Bo/cardio kickboxing style aerobics.  The thumb flaps hold them in place so they don't slide up and down your arms while moving.

I do not have any, so I can't say how they would work.  I have tried general wrist/ankle weights, and at least the ones I have slide all over the place which is annoying.

Could those who use the ankle/wrist weights let the rest of us know how they work/feel?

Buckethead's Nun Chuka Kata off the album Monsters and Robots is mandatory nunchaku listening.

I go the other way - by regularly filming and deleting my practice sessions, I'm completely used to having the camera rolling and it adds no extra pressure.

Some awesome advice here and great opinions!!

For me what works in regards to #9 is it depends on if it's a move that you "cycle" or if it's a "one time" move. Like the btb weaves don't look great if you only do one weave and then hop out of it. But if you do 3 or 4 it gives time to get the audience attention.

Either way, after I can do the move about 3 times in a row I create a "combo" where I do a move, transition to the new move, then do another move and loop that. I'll do the new move how many times feels comfortable in rotation.

Anyway, that's what works for me, alot of stuff here that I never thought of tho.

Aerials & Throws - Aerials maintain the same "plane". A throw changes it's location.

When you toss under your leg, I think that's a throw, because it's center point of spin moves. But generally, what I think of as "aerials" are done in front of you where you have a quick release and grab with the center point of the spin staying the same.

*shrug* there's a huge grey area in trying to define the two.

Great thread Matt!!!  Clap

I define the difference with aerials being when the chucks flow into the air, almost like they're going into the air themselves (think of matt's aerials), and throws are when you throw them into the air, like you would a ball. You pysically push the chuck into the air. Like seb's throws where he throws them, then does a bunch of passes.

I don't separate the two - if it catches air, it's an aerial to me.
A throw is the act of releasing an aerial, not a type of aerial.

If you want to try and define sub categories of aerials, fine by me - but I reckon we keep aerial as the master category for all types of aerial, and throw as the act of releasing an aerial - so you need to use different words for these sub categories.

Weights are awesome!  When I lift, I always incorporate a solid forearm routine... Grabbing a 20 lb weight with each hand and rotating in various circles until they felt ready to burn off.  It used to be, because I loved to grapple, and wanted a strong grip, to be able to wrench out those wrist/arm locks..but I've noticed it's also helped with the chux.

I highly recommend the Dynaflex Powerball available here: http://www.dynaflexpro.com/flash_site/sportsgyros.html

There are a number of different exercises you can do with them to strengthen different muscles, mostly in the arms  though--which translates well to nunchaku.  The exercise motions are similar to nunchaku motions (e.g., Fig. 8's), but the gyroscope generates more force than nunchaku.

That looks interesting, but $45 is pretty steep.  A friend of mine had one of these (to work on his golfing) but I don't think it was 40 lbs of torque!  Probably about 25.

I have a cheapy hand grip that I keep in the car so I can exercise on my daily commute.  It does not work the lateral motion though, so I may splurge and add to my car gym  grin
